But the Danai left behind in Greece also vanished from Grecian history. What happened to them? The Tribe of Dan had the peculiar characteristic of stamping their name on places and geographical features almost wherever they went, thus leaving their trail behind them. Hence we see an additional significance of the words of their great ancestor, Jacob, who said: “‘ Dan shall be a serpent by the way”’ (Gen. 49,1”) or “‘ Dan shall be a serpent’s trail,’’ as another translation renders it. ‘“‘ Dan was to leave a meandering trail like a serpent’s wandering over the face of the earth.’’ Even in the early days in their old land of Canaan, when a party of the adventurous Tribe of Dan made an expedition into the extreme north of the country and seized the city of Laish, they changed its name to Dan “after the name of Dan their father”’ (Judges 18,?® Joshua 19,47). Of the various exploits of the Danites we recall one right in the south of the country as recorded in Judges 18, #4"1?; ‘‘ And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war. And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah; wherefore, they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day; behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.” Here again they left their name behind them. Page 40 — we find the names of Dan-Sowar (Dan’s resting place) and Dan-Sobairse (Dan’s habitation) on Ptolemy’s ancient map of Ireland.* Page 40 — So, if that part of the Tribe of Dan (Danai) who were left behind in Greece, but soon disappeared from Grecian history, really departed from that country by a land route, we should be able to follow them by their trail. Let us ignore history for the time being and try to trace them by their distinctive trail—Dan—Dan—Dan—and if successful, let us then turn to the pages of history to see if we have detected the track aright. Let the reader look at a map of Europe, and having located Greece, scan all around for the nearest ‘“ DAN.” A little to the east of Greece will be observed the well-known strait called the DarDANelles. A comparatively short distance to the north of the Dardanelles is the River DANube. Following this great river to its upper reaches in Germany, and continuing to look in a northerly direction on the map, we notice the DANish archipelago and Denmark, which country is called DANmark by the people themselves living in that land.—DENmark in the English language, but DANmark in DANish, DANmark in Swedish, DANmark in Norwegian, DANemark in German, DANemark in French, DANio in Esperanto. So, according to the trail, this section of Dan, on leaving Greece, first turned east as far as the Dardanelles, and then went in a northerly direction right across Europe to Denmark.
